Training

+ What data does Hylofit measure?

The HYLOFIT System measures:

  • Heart rate of the horse
  • Heart rate of the rider
  • Speed of the ride
  • Distance of the ride
  • Duration of the ride
  • Outside temperature and humidity during the ride
  • Calculates rider calories
  • Determines Zone intensity of the ride
  • Displays map of the ride route

+ How is heart rate measured on the horse?

The girth attachment is a new generation of heart rate monitor for horses. The Hylofit System features sensors made from conductive material which adapt perfectly to the movements of a galloping horse. These sensors include an absorbent cushion to ensure permanent contact with the horse’s skin and maximum accuracy.

The sensors in the girth attachment detect the electrical signal of your horse’s every heartbeat. The horse transmitter measures the horse’s heart rate in real time and sends this information via Bluetooth continuously and wirelessly to the Hylofit app.

+ How are speed and distance measured?

Speed and distance are measured using the GPS on your phone.

+ How are outside temperature and humidity measured?

Using your location, the Hylofit app has an API that extracts tempature and humidity from the weather channel.

+ Why is my horse’s heart rate important?

Heart rate (HR) is a great indicator of workload intensity, stress and pain. Knowing your horse’s HR while at rest and before, during and after a ride, can give you better insights into their overall conditioning. HR monitoring can alert you to early signs of illness and indicate under or overexertion during training.

HR is expressed as the number of beats per minute (bpm). A horse’s resting HR is in the range of 25-40 bpm and its maximum HR is in the range of 200-240 bpm. HR is individual to each horse and can vary with size, breed, age and temperament. Knowing an individual horse’s HR range is essential for smarter training and improved performance and wellbeing.

+ What are heart rate zones?

Heart rate zones can help you optimize your horse’s workout by targeting different training intensities. The default zones are calculated using your horse’s baseline resting heart rate (RHR) and estimated maximum (Max) heart rate, which can be edited in your horse’s profile.

Zone 5 – MAXIMUM, ANAEROBIC POWER ZONE

Power zone, which means your heart rate is greater than 90% of maximum, is the maximum-intensity training zone.

he peak zone is for short intense sessions that improve performance and speed.

Zone 4 – HARD, THRESHOLD ZONE

Threshold zone, which means your heart rate is 80 to 90% of maximum, is the hard-intensity training zone. In this zone, you're pushing your horse but not straining. For most horse’s, this is the training zone to target.

Zone 3 – MODERATE, AEROBIC POWER ZONE

Aerobic zone, which means your heart rate is 70 to 80% of maximum, is the moderate-intensity training zone and may be a good place to target for recreational horses.

Zone 2 – LIGHT, STRENGTHENING ZONE

Strengthening zone, which means your heart rate is 60 to 70% of maximum, is the light-intensity training zone

Zone 1 – VERY LIGHT, ACTIVE RECOVERY ZONE

Active recovery zone, which means your heart rate is up to 60% of maximum, is the very light-intensity training zone.

+ What is intensity or zone intensity?

Heart rate (HR) is a great indicator of workload intensity. Knowing an individual horse’s HR range is essential for smarter training, improved performance and wellbeing. Hylofit uses a calculation based on time spent in HR Zones to determine how hard your horse is training:

Zone 5: Maximum, Anaerobic Power - 90 to Max Zone 4: Hard, Threshold - 80% to 90% Zone 3: Moderate, Aerobic Power - 70% to 80% Zone 2: Light, Strengthening - 60% to 70% Zone 1: Very Light, Active Recovery - Resting to 60%.

+ What is resting heart rate?

Resting heart rate (RHR) measures your horse’s heart beats while at rest. RHR of a horse is generally between 25 and 40 beats per minute (bpm). RHR can be an important indicator of overall health and wellbeing of a horse’s heart. Changes to a horse’s resting heart rate (RHR) can be an indication of overexertion, stress, illness or pain.

+ How is resting heart rate measured?

You will first need to establish a Resting Heart Rate (RHR) baseline. A baseline will be an average of the RHR taken over 3 consecutive days. RHR is best measured in the morning while your horse is still in its stall and taken by someone the horse knows. Getting an accurate reading the first few times may be difficult if the horse is nervous because of a new situation, so you may need several attempts.

To take the RHR measurement in the Hylofit app go to your horse’s profile and select RHR. It will take 2 minutes for a reading.

+ What is Max heart rate?

Maximum (Max) heart rate is used to calculate different heart rate zones. A horse’s Max HR is in the range of 200-240 beats per minute (bpm). Hylofit default Max heart rate is . Instead of using the default, you can create a custom Max heart rate if you're targeting a specific heart rate or zone. In the Hylofit app you can find an option to change the Max heart rate in your horse’s profile.

+ How do I change the heart rate zones for my horse?

You can change the heart rate zones for a horse by changing the Maximum heart rate (Max HR): Open HYLOFIT app > HORSES, select your horse you want to change their heart rate zones. In the horse’s profile, click the more “(...)” icon in the header on the right and select “EDIT HORSE” in the pop up. Scroll down to “MAXIMUM HEART RATE (BPM)” and change the number.

Max HR is used to calculate different heart rate zones. A horse’s Max HR is in the range of 200-240 beats per minute (bpm). Hylofit default Max HR is 200 bpm. Instead of using the default, you can create a custom Max HR if you're targeting a specific heart rate or zone.

+ What impacts heart rate?

Heart rate may be affected by any a number of factors at any given moment. Movement, temperature, humidity, stress level, physical body position, and medication use are just a few things that can affect your horse. Therefore it is important to understand your horse’s heart rate during normal activities in order to know when their heart rate is not normal.

Different medical conditions and medications can impact your heart rate. Consult your trainer or veterinarian before starting a training routine.

+ What impacts the accuracy of my own heart rate reading?

As with all heart-rate tracking technology, whether a chest strap, armband or a wrist sensor, accuracy is affected by personal physiology, location of wear, and type of movement. With HYLOFIT you have the option of choosing the heart rate monitor you wear while riding your horse. Hylofit provides a chest strap and transmitter for the rider. In addition, you could chose to use an Apple watch or purchase another heart rate monitor (such as an optical armband) and pair it your Hylofit app.

For best results we recommend using the HYLOFIT chest strap and transmitter. We do not recommend an optical sensor on your wrist to measure your own heart rate.

If using a chest strap you should wear it tight but not constricting during your ride. Do not wear your heart rate monitor too tight. A tight band, whether around your chest, arm or wrist, restricts blood flow, potentially affecting the heart rate signal.

+ What if my horse has a thick coat?

You should use electrode gel if your horse has thick hair. The gel will help to detect a heart rate signal using the Hylofit Device.

+ What if my Hylofit device on my horse keeps moving during a ride?

To prevent the Hylofit from moving during a ride, depending on your girth, use one or all of the retention straps and Velcro the girth attachment into place.

+ Why is it important to tag ACTIVITY for all my rides?

Categorizing your rides by ACTIVITY allows you to filter your rides for easier comparisons within the app. There are many ways to filter your rides:

1) Open HYLOFIT App > HORSES and select the horse profile you want to view. Toggle by ACTIVITY to see the ACTIVITY SUMMARY. You can also used the drop down to change the time period; or,

2) Open HYLOFIT App > RIDES and swipe up on “MY RIDES.” Click the search icon and type in the ACTIVITY you want to filter by.

Troubleshooting

+ Why won’t my Hylofit transmitter pair?

A few troubleshooting steps to take:

1) Check that Bluetooth is enabled on your phone settings. 2) Make sure the electrodes on your Hylofit Device are in direct contact with the skin of your horse to enable them to read a heart rate. 3) Make sure the horse transmitter is snapped into the girth attachment. 4) Use water or electrode gel, especially in cold weather to help with conductivity. 5) Check or replace the battery on your transmitter.

+ Do I need network or wifi to record a ride using Hylofit?

No. If you are not connected to wifi or your network, your ride will record as an OFFLINE RIDE and the RIDE SUMMARY will be available once your phone connects to a network and your ride is synced.

Care Guidelines

+ Where should I store my Hylofit?

You should store your Hylofit in a safe lotion where is can lie flat and stay dry.

Do not leave the Hylofit exposed to a heat source or in a high-temperature location, such as in the sun in an unattended vehicle. To prevent the possibility of damage, remove Hylofit from the high-temperature location or store it out of direct sunlight.

How should I care for my Hylofit? The Hylofit girth attachment and chest strap are water resistant but not waterproof. Do not immerse the Hylofit girth attachment, chest strap or transmitters in water or other liquids. You may, for example, wear and use Hylofit during exercise or in the rain.

Clean the girth attachment and chest strap gently with a mild soap and water solution when needed. Never use alcohol or any abrasive material (e.g. steel wool or cleaning chemicals).
